To give you the most honest answer we can, there is no SET PATH to starting your career in I.T.  If you ask 10 different people how they got started you will get a different answer every time.

Learn IT Fundamentals

EVERYONE SAYS THIS BUT WHAT DOES IT MEAN?!

Figuring out what technologies to learn can be quite difficult when it comes to IT.  However, a company called CompTIA is here to save the day.  CompTIA offers a certification called the A+.  This is the first and best fundamental-based certification that you can learn and/or obtain to help get your IT career started.

You can write out your notes on pen and paper, you can pull up a Google Doc, or you can get with the times and use something like Notion, but in all reality as long as you’re taking notes you’re doing the right thing!

YOU DON’T EVEN HAVE TO SPEND ANY MONEY!  USE YOUR EXISTING COMPUTER OR LEARN HOW TO GET FREE EQUIPMENT!

A home lab can help you get hands-on experience when it comes to the technologies that you’ll start learning from the CompTIA A+.

You can use the computer you already have to virtualize everything you’ll need to build your own home lab with computers, servers, network routers, and switches only VIRTUALIZED.

You can even go a step further and use Microsoft Azure or Amazon’s AWS cloud services for FREE to build a lab.

Build Your Network

IN 2020 EVERYTHING CHANGED FOREVER.  THE BEST WAY TO GET A JOB NOWADAYS IS BY BUILDING A STRONG SOCIAL NETWORK.

Truth be told this change was happening before 2020.  The digital age is upon us and to get yourself noticed by the right people(the ones who can get you a job) you need to be on social media.

More specifically you need to be on LinkedIn and Discord more so than any other social platform that exists right now.  Twitter and Reddit will be invaluable sources for information, but LinkedIn and Discord will help you build real connections with real people who can help you get your IT Career Started!

 

Become the Community

YOUR NOTES ARE KEY TO MAKING YOU SUCCESSFUL.  SHARE WHAT YOU’RE LEARNING AND BE PART OF THE CONVERSATION!

Even if you think everyone already knows the information you’re sharing, share it anyway!  Put your own spin on things!  Sharing information that you’re learning or being part of an existing conversation around the topics you are learning are a great way to improve your network and get you noticed by the right people.
